Name: Dion Bull
Age: 26
Growing up in Forster, which is located on the Mid North coast of NSW, has meant that all my life has been spent in and around the water.
I started off my angling exploits by chasing Leatherjacket and Bream from the local jetty, as my angling progressed and a desire started to burn for a new challenge, I graduated to targeting Blackfish from the rocks.
As I got older, I began to chase bigger prey, heading offshore to harass the local population of Kingfish, Trevally and Snapper on the local reef systems. No matter what style of fishing I was involved with, I always loved to target fish on light tackle!
If I wasn’t feeding my hunger for all things fishing, I was either body boarding or diving in the pristine waters!
Although I’ve sampled most of the fishing options available locally, I’ve always had a burning passion for the local estuary system (Even though it’s called a lake!), with acres of oyster covered racks and trays, endless weed beds, crystal clear flats and miles upon miles of bank side structure. There is always somewhere exciting to tempt the wary bream, whiting and flathead population out from!
Purchasing a house with my Fiancée has seen me trade Wallis Lake for the Manning River as my “Local” waterway.
The Manning River has a diverse range of species on offer and with endless amounts of bank side structure, flats, oyster leases and rock walls to fish. I’m sure my passion for catching bream on lures and ultra light tackle will only continue to grow!
I’m always looking for new challenges and I’m very keen to land my first bream on fly gear!
With my enthusiasm for catching estuarine species on soft plastics and hardbody lures extending into my professional life as I’m currently studying a degree in Marine Science and Management via Southern Cross University, and I’m aiming towards a career in gaining a better understanding of the local marine environment and the estuarine species that I love to catch (and release!)
I’ve only just started out in the Bream Tournament scene, but luckily I’ve already found that combination of travelling to new systems, meeting new people and the challenges that tournament fishing holds to be a highly addictive past time.
I feel that I’m extremely lucky to be able to combine my love of fishing, the local area, photography and a career all into catching bream and a wide variety of other species. Fishing, to me at least, is certainly something special!
